United Way VITA Needs You!
United Way is in need of volunteers with an interest in finance or accounting, and in assisting hardworking people. Help individuals and families eligible for Earned Income Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits through the United Way VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) free tax preparation program.
Volunteer training, testing & certification:
- Training is free and provided by an IRS Specialist. Classroom, on-line learning and self-study or a combination of these options are designed to educate and prepare the volunteer for the tax season.
- All volunteer tests are open-book. All reference and resource materials may be used to complete the test. Volunteers are asked to complete the test on their own.
- All training will be provided including any necessary software training.
- Basic level training- The time requirement for completing the basic level tax preparation course is twelve to fifteen hours. This includes hands on training with Tax Wise software. Training is free and provided by an IRS Specialist. Classroom, on-line learning and self-study or a combination of these options are designed to educate and prepare the volunteer for tax season. Upon completion of the course the volunteer will take a test to become a certified tax preparer.
- Intermediate/Advanced level training- This level training is a continuation of the basic level course and goes into more detail about additional deductions and multiple income sources. Completing this training is an additional six to eight hours.
- In addition to preparing tax returns, volunteers are needed as Greeters/Screeners or Spanish Interpreters.
Qualifications:
- Desire to help hard-working families
- Ability to successfully meet and deal with people from different backgrounds and circumstances.
- Pride in performing tasks completely and accurately.
- Willingness to spend a minimum of two-four hours per volunteer day, once a week at VITA site between January 15 and April 15.
- Ability to successfully complete IRS tax law and e-file training and certification program.

- Tutor a student
- Assist with special events (festivals, school-wide suppers, book fairs, etc.)
- Assist with fund-raising projects
- Volunteer with art/music/PE classes/technology lab
- Volunteer in the media center
- Volunteer for picture day
- Volunteer as a computer consultant/helper
- Take pictures of school events
- Help office staff
- Decorate and change bulletin boards
- Help with academic competitions
- Help with teacher and staff appreciation activities
- Help with school's newsletter/web page
