Arthritis /Joint Pain Rehabilitation
Program Overview
Arthritis is a painful and debilitating joint disease that greatly reduces the quality-of-life of its sufferers. In recent years, exercise has been shown to have a significant positive effect on the symptoms of arthritis. The South County Family YMCA’s on-going Arthritis Rehab Program incorporates the latest medical and fitness knowledge in a program that offers a multitude of group and individual exercise options.
Arthritis program participants have a variety of options just for them. All our arthritis group classes are taught by Arthritis Foundation certified instructors and follow guidelines put forth by the Foundation. We offer water aerobics classes in our heated pool, land aerobics classes, arthritis-specific yoga and arthritis-specific Tai-Chi classes.
Participants meet on a monthly basis with their exercise physiologist. A personalized exercise program is tailored for each participant depending on their joint mobility, range of motion, fitness level and goals. The exercise physiologist will create a comprehensive wellness program to enhance cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility.
Individual consultations with our dietitian will ensure that each participant is getting the most balanced nutritional plan and sound advice on energy balance and supplement usage.
Mind and body classes are a large part of our arthritis program as we feel the connection between the conscious and the physical is an extremely important component in healing and rehabilitation. Classes may include meditation, breath work, yoga and Reiki.
Participants are encouraged to attend a regular lecture series on topics related to arthritis and health promotion and to attend regular support group meetings with their peers all offered at the South County Family YMCA’s Venice facility.
